BIO
Dr. Jason Freeman serves as the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Louisville, where he directs the Cardinal Marching Band, Pep Band, and Community Band. Additionally, he supervises student teachers. He completed his doctoral studies at Florida State University, where he studied Music Education with a concentration in Wind Band Conducting. He also holds a Master of Music in Horn Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Winston-Salem State University. As a student, he served as a student arranger, a three-year section leader, and a member of the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Marching Band, and Horn Ensemble. In 2009, he was selected to the prestigious National Collegiate Wind Ensemble and performed under the world-class conductor H. Robert Reynolds at Carnegie Hall. In 2011, Dr. Freeman was selected as principal horn at the HBCU National Band Director Consortium.
Dr. Freeman previously taught band in North Carolina and Tennessee. During his four years in Tennessee, he conducted the marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band. The program grew from fewer than ten students to over seventy members. After leaving Tennessee, he returned home to North Carolina as Director of Bands at his alma mater. While serving as director, the program grew from 120 students to over 200, receiving superior ratings at marching and concert adjudicated events. His most notable accomplishment while teaching was conducting music by Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his 100th birthday. Selections included Divertimento, Slava!, and The Candide Suite.
Dr. Freeman is active as a music arranger, guest conductor, adjudicator, and band clinician. His arrangements have been performed at the high school and collegiate levels.
