The Patterson Lab is interested in how metabolic pathways and the nutrient microenvironment regulate T cell fitness and function. Over the past two decades, it has become increasingly clear that the metabolism of immune cells (immunometabolism) is highly dynamic and that altered metabolism or nutrient availability can have significant effects on the immune system’s function. The Patterson lab leverages the monogenic (e.g. single gene) Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI) and Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) to understand the immunometabolic mechanisms that govern T cell function. Recent work in the lab has focused on the gene GFPT1 and the Hexosamine Biosynthetic Pathway (HBP). Our work uses molecular, genetic, immunologic, and metabolic methods to probe the interplay between immune cell metabolism and function and to identify immunometabolic deficiencies that drive immune dysfunction.
