Bonnie B. Fonseca-Greber discovered Linguistics at the Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland, purely by chance, after having already completed her B.A. and M.A. and settling down in French-speaking Switzerland. Her abiding interest remains how people use language in everyday conversation. Of particular interest are the associated changes in structure and meaning that have occurred over the years, yielding a radically different analysis of French today and transforming our understanding of the pronouns, the verb paradigm, and negation—something with major consequences for the teaching and learning of French, as well as for corpus and computational linguistics and the training of large language models (LLMs). Her areal focus is French in Switzerland, as attested to by her corpus of Conversational Swiss French (CSF-1: 1998 and CSF-2: 2018). An emerging interest is how Parkinson’s disease affects everyday conversation, in first and second language (L1 and L2) settings. In this context, she serves as a Research Mentor in the University of Louisville Biomedical Integrative Opportunity for Mentored Experience Development Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (UL-BIOMED-PREP), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded program--Please note, this NIH grant was cancelled April 2, 2025.
