BIO

Dr. Erin Hogan is an Assistant Professor of Literacy in the Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Teacher Education at the University of Louisville. She is a former special education teacher interested in understanding how to improve reading outcomes for students, especially students in grades four to eight, emergent bilinguals, and students with reading difficulties. Her research uses various methods to identify effective instructional practices that engage students in discourse as well as effective systems of teacher learning that increase classroom use of these practices.
Before joining UofL, Dr. Hogan was an Institute of Education Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, where she contributed to large-scale intervention studies. Her scholarship has been published in top-tier journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, Science Education, Remedial and Special Education, and TESOL Journal, among others. Dr. Hogan has received several research and teaching awards, including the Reading Hall of Fame Emerging Scholars Fellowship from the Literacy Research Association and UofL's Faculty Favorite recognition. Her research has been supported by the Kentucky Department of Education, Smith Richardson Foundation, and the Institute of Education Sciences.
At the University of Louisville, Dr. Hogan teaches courses in children’s literature, literacy assessment, and reading instruction, and she mentors both undergraduate and graduate students.
