Dr. Justin Kingery is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine whose work spans medical education, research, and clinical excellence. He earned both his MD and PhD (Physiology and Biophysics) from the University of Louisville and, following an Internal Medicine residency in which he was voted Best Resident Educator, was appointed the first Global Health fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine and then an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Cornell. His research sits at the intersection of cardiovascular disease, immunology, and global health, examining heart disease from the population level to single-cell immunology; while at Cornell he helped establish and run global cardiovascular cohorts of over 5,000 participants in East Africa and Haiti, characterizing the burden of heart failure in low-resource settings and its underlying immunology. He currently serves as medical director for NIH-funded studies, is a peer reviewer for international journals, and has been cited over 2,000 times.

 

Today he holds leadership roles across the institution as Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine residency, Director of Admissions and Associate Program Director of the UofL MSTP MD/PhD program, and Vice Chief of Staff of University of Louisville Hospital, and is passionate about mentoring residents and students and developing the next generation of physician-scientists. Having practiced and taught across four continents, he was instrumental in securing Kentucky's first NIH grant designating the UofL MD/PhD program as an official MSTP, developed a centralized research database to link residents to research, serves as faculty lead of the Resident Research Committee, and was elected to the AOA medical honor society as an outstanding medical educator in 2026. His clinical and teaching appointments have included Medical Director of the NewYork-Presbyterian step-down unit, lead faculty for the Weill Bugando Medical Intensive Care Unit in Mwanza, Tanzania, and founding Course Director of the UofL Longitudinal Clinical Elective, and he has served nationally on the AAIM Research Committee and ABIM Item Writing Task Force, as well as on the Louisville Department of Public Health Medical Advisory Committee. Outside of medicine, he is an enthusiastic amateur chef and Kentucky State Fair competitor, and — most importantly — a proud husband to Dr. Francesca Kingery (Pediatrics) and dad to his two girls, Camille (8) and Sophia (5), in his beloved city of Louisville.
