Dr. Jacek M. Zurada (SM’83, F’96, LF’14) is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He served as Department Chair from 2005 to 2007 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.

ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS: He has held visiting professorships at Princeton University (one year), Northeastern University (one year), Auburn University (two years), the National University of Singapore (one year), and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he served as a Distinguished Nanyang Professor and Michael Fam Distinguished Professor in summers between 2002-2016. His additional visiting appointments include the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan; the University of Chile in Santiago; China University of Petroleum in Qingdao; the University of Siena and the University of Catania in Italy; Toyohashi University of Technology and the Brain Research Institute at RIKEN in Saitama, Japan; the University of Rostock and Wismar Technische Hochschule in Germany; Varna University of Technology in Bulgaria; Stellenbosch University in South Africa; Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia; the University of Marie-Curie in Paris, France; and Warsaw University of Technology in Poland. He also served twice as a Fulbright Specialist, during the summers of 2010 in Bulgaria and 2013 in Italy.

RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS: Dr. Zurada has authored several widely adopted textbooks, including Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems and Active RC Filters. He has edited or co-edited several volumes, including Computational Intelligence: Imitating Life (IEEE Press), Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing (MIT Press), and Computational Intelligence: Research Frontiers (Springer), and has co-edited several dozen volumes in Springer conference series. He has published more than 500 works in neural networks, computational intelligence, data mining, image and signal processing, bioinformatics, and microelectronic systems. He has delivered 190 invited plenary conference presentations and seminars worldwide, many in his capacity as an IEEE Distinguished Speaker/Lecturer for the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society; the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society; and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.

RECOGNITIONS AND AWARDS: Dr. Zurada has received numerous awards recognizing distinction in research and teaching, including the 1993 Presidential Award for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity and the 2001 Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Profession. He received the Golden Jubilee Medal from the Circuits and Systems Society in 2000 and the Meritorious Service Award from the Computational Intelligence Society in 2008. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and a Fellow of the International Neural Networks Society. He has also received numerous IEEE and professional society distinctions for research and service contributions. In 2020, he was inducted into the IEEE Technical Activities Board Hall of Honor. In 2022, he received the J. Groszkowski Gold Medal from the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers for leadership in building an information-based society. In 2025, he received a Memorial Medal from the President of the Polish Neural Networks Society for 30 years of distinguished service.

MAJOR HONORS: In 2003, Dr. Zurada was conferred the Title of Professor by the President of Poland. In 2005, he was elected a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), and in 2023, he was elected a member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences. He holds four honorary doctorates: from Óbuda University in Budapest, Hungary; China University of Electronics and Technology and Sichuan University, both in Chengdu, Sichuan; and China University of Petroleum in Qingdao, China. In 2022, he was conferred the Honorary Doctorate (Dr. h.c.) by the Czestochowa University of Technology in Poland. His most recent distinctions include the 2025 IEEE Norbert Wiener Award for contributions to technical cybernetics and foundational contributions to neural networks as learning systems.

PERSONAL: In addition to English, Dr. Zurada speaks Polish as his native language and is fluent in written and spoken German, French, and Russian. His interests, in addition to the frontiers of intelligent systems, include travel, foreign cultures, languages, and modern history.
