The Hellmann Laboratory combines technical expertise in liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (lipidomics) and flow cytometry with models of acute and chronic inflammation to investigate mechanisms that control the magnitude and duration of immune responses. In doing so, we have contributed to the understanding that chronic inflammation that provokes the development of cardio-metabolic disease (e.g., atherosclerosis and diet-induced insulin resistance/diabetes) is, in part, due to a failure in pro-resolving signaling pathways and impairments in immune cell function. We have also recently uncovered a novel mechanism by which exercise stimulated catecholamine release enhances the production of pro-resolving lipid mediators in macrophages and how changes in mitochondrial function and intermediary metabolism confer resolution processess. These investigations are carried out in both pre-clinical models and human clinical trials to bridge foundational research with clinical application.
