Dr. F. John Firriolo is a Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and has been a faculty member since 1991. In June 1999, he was appointed Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, and since June 2023, he has served as Interim Chair of the Department of Diagnosis and Oral Health. Dr. Firriolo received his DDS degree from the University of Maryland in 1986 and then completed a General Practice Residency at Staten Island University Hospital, New York.  In 1991, Dr. Firriolo completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at the University of Maryland and received a PhD degree in oral pathology in 1994.

Dr. Firriolo's teaching responsibilities over the past 35 years include oral medicine, general pathology, oral pathology, dental clinical pharmacology and internal medicine as it relates to dentistry.  He is a member of the University of Louisville faculty dental practice (ULDA) in the areas of oral medicine and clinical oral pathology. He is also a member of the consulting medical/dental staff at the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, University Hospital, Department of Dentistry.  His areas of practice include the diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases and salivary gland dysfunction, the management of oral complications of cancer treatment, such as those due to chemotherapy or treatment with radiation involving the mouth and surrounding areas, as well as the dental management of medically complex patients.
