BIO
Dr. John Pierce Wise, Sr. is the head of the Wise Laboratory for Environmental and Genetic Toxicology, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Distinguished University Scholar, and Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)-T32-funded University of Louisville Environmental Health Sciences Training Program in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Wise’s research focuses on understanding how environmental toxicants affect health and cause cancer from a One Environmental Health perspective considering cellular and molecular mechanisms in both humans and wildlife, with a particular emphasis on lung cancer and chromosome instability and translating those mechanisms and outcomes to organisms and populations. He has held prominent positions in societies related to these fields including most recently serving as President of the International Society for Trace Element Research in Humans (ISTERH) and President of the Carcinogenesis Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology (SOT). Dr. Wise has earned numerous grants from many different federal agencies including most recently the prestigious Revolutionizing Innovative, Visionary Environmental Health Research (RIVER) 8-year R35 grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). He has published over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and presented more than 800 research abstracts on his research. His work has been featured in numerous articles in local, national and international press and social media sites including short documentaries with Alexandra Cousteau and Miles O’Brien. He has a strong record of leadership, mentorship and groundbreaking research and has trained over 250 individuals in environmental health at faculty, postdoctoral fellow, graduate student, undergraduate, high school and middle school student levels. He is a multi-award-winning scientist earning awards from multiple societies and universities in all facets of being a professor: research, teaching service and science communication. For example, SOT recognized his scientific and mentoring excellence with four prestigious awards: its Toxicologist Mentoring Award, its Education Award, its Science Communication Training Award and its Career Achievement Award for metals toxicology. The Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS) honored him with its Education Award and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) honored him with Outstanding College/University Mentor Award. Earning any one of these awards is a rare accomplishment; he is the only person to have earned any combination of three of them. Dr. Wise holds a B.S. with distinction and with recognition in biology from George Mason University, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from George Washington University. His postdoctoral training focused on molecular epidemiology under Drs. Curtis Harris and Peter Shields at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), followed by training in occupational health and risk assessment as a senior toxicologist at Jonathan Borak and Company. He served on the faculty of Yale University’s School of Medicine and School of Public Health, the University of Southern Maine, prior to joining the faculty at the University of Louisville, School of Medicine.
