I have a strong track record of academic and professional leadership. Leadership and communication are central pillars of both my professional activities and my student training. I believe scientific leadership and scientific communication are essential aspects of being a scientist. I nurture leadership as part of my laboratory culture and provide the time and guidance necessary to succeed at it as the goal is not to produce scientists that merely excel at conducting experiments, but ones who can lead the field forward and make a difference. Science communication, both oral and written, is also a major point of emphasis and a key skill for effective leadership. In my field, I hold or have held numerous leadership roles in professional societies. I am currently Past-President of the International Society of Trace Element Research in Humans (ISTERH), President for the Society of Toxicology’s Carcinogenesis Specialty Section, and was recently Chair for the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’s (SETAC) annual meeting. I have reviewed papers for over 100 different journals and grants for a wide array of funding agencies. On campus, I have served on many academic committees and directed core facilities and centers. K-12 outreach is also an important part of my professional activities, we have helped provide K-12 teachers with training and lesson plans in toxicology that they can take back to the classroom. In my laboratory, we have trained over 50 high school students and high school teachers. We reach out and visit K-12 science classrooms and support science fairs whenever the opportunity arises. In recognition of my commitment to service, I also won an award for Public Service during my time as a faculty member at Yale University, and now the University of Louisville School of Medicine honored me with its Faculty Excellence Award for Distinguished Service to National and/or International Community.
