Joe Grant is a retired, 24-year veteran of law enforcement. He began his career in law enforcement in 1984 with the Jeffersonville City Police Department in Indiana. In 1998, he accepted a lateral transfer to the Jefferson County Police Department in Louisville, Kentucky and was a member of the agency during the 2003 merger of Jefferson County and Louisville City establishing Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).  During his time in Louisville, he served seven 7 1/2 years as the department’s primary instructor in Diversity, Ethics, Interpersonal Communication, and Defensive Tactics.  He retired from LMPD in 2008.

During his law enforcement career, Joe received his B.A. degree in General Studies from Indiana University Southeast, in 1996. He received his MA. degree in Justice Administration in 2001 and his Ph.D. in Urban and Public Affairs in 2011--both from the University of Louisville.

Immediately following his retirement, Joe accepted a teaching position at the University of Louisville in the Department of Criminal Justice.  His teaching focus included, Policing, the Criminal Justice System, Ethics, Conflict Management, Career Development, and the Department’s Senior Seminar course. In 2014 he left the the university to teach at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, IN and returned to the University of Louisville in 2018.
