Dr. Hart earned her PhD in Communication, and her chief interests center in health communication, environmental communication, and organizational communication. Her work has examined numerous foci in these domains with special interest in message production and interpretation and links to healthy lifestyles, workplaces, and communities. For the past several years, she has studied environmental communication (and creating sustainable communities, through interlinkages in environmental, economic, and societal/community functioning and health), substance use (e.g., tobacco, cannabis, tobacco control communication), and health communication (e.g., messages, health behavior, knowledge, perceptions, attitudes) as well as led community engagement and research translation initiatives. Her research is often rooted in communities, regularly involves populations that experience or are vulnerable to health risks, and frequently employs a social determinants lens.
