Dr. Lai is a fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist serving the Midwest since 2014. He is board-certified in ophthalmology and practices neuro-ophthalmology and comprehensive ophthalmology. Due to the significant shortage of neuro-ophthalmologists in the Midwest, he provides neuro-ophthalmic care at multiple locations and institutions in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

Dr. Lai is a passionate educator and trains ophthalmology residents at the University of Louisville and Indiana University. He has won several teaching awards over the years. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and has served on several education-related committees, including the Resident Self-Assessment Committee and Practicing Ophthalmologists Advisory Committee for Education. He has twice-received the AAO's prestigious Secretariat Award for his contributions to the field of ophthalmology. He is also an active member of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS), has chaired multiple committees (receiving the 2020 NANOS Merit Award), and currently serves on the Board of Directors.
