Dr. Kim Allan Williams, Sr., MD, MACC, FAHA, MASNC, FESC, is a physician specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Louisville and our clinical partner, UofL Health. Dr. Williams joined the School of Medicine in July 2022 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine and was subsequently named Legacy Foundation of Kentuckiana Endowed Chair in Health Equity. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, received his BA from the University of Chicago (UC) in 1975, and remained there to graduate from the Pritzker School of Medicine in 1975. Dr. Williams then traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to complete his residency at Emory University in 1982, and subsequently returned to the Pritzker School of Medicine for fellowships in Cardiology and Clinical Pharmacology (1985) and Nuclear Medicine (1986). In 2005, he completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography at Cabrini Hospital in New York City. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Dr. Williams began his academic leadership at the University of Chicago in 1986 and was promoted to Professor of Medicine and Radiology in 2003. Since then, he has also served as faculty and in various leadership roles at Wayne State University (2010-2013) and Rush University (2013-2022).
Dr. Williams is an active member of numerous national and international medical societies and has served as President of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) (2015-2016), a founding member (1993) and President (2004-2005) of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), and Chairman of the Board for the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) (2008-2010). His career has focused on advocacy for national nutrition education, the eradication of national and international healthcare disparities, improved access to and sustainable financing in healthcare, overall health system reform, and advanced cardiac imaging. He has served as a cardiology delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) for over 25 years and has been a consultant for various agencies, organizations, task forces, and committees, including the Food & Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the task force advising the 2022 White House Conference on Nutrition, Health, and Hunger.
Dr. Williams has spearheaded multiple community-based initiatives, including founding the Urban Cardiology Initiative in Detroit, Michigan; the HEART Program (Helping Everyone Assess Risk Today) in Chicago, Illinois; and an expansion of those efforts with the HEART (Helping Everyone Address Risk Today) program in Louisville, Kentucky. He is an internationally recognized author and speaker, with many of his recent contributions focusing on cardionutrition and health equity.
