Professor Kurt X. Metzmeier is interim director of the law library at Brandeis Law. He joined the library faculty in 2000 as a legal reference librarian and was promoted to associate librarian in 2002. He teaches advanced legal research, legal history and legal research.

Professor Metzmeier earned his J.D. from Brandeis Law, where he was a member of the Brandeis Honor Society and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Family Law. He also holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Louisville. He has been a member of the Kentucky Bar since 1995.

Before joining Brandeis Law, Professor Metzmeier worked as reference and computer systems librarian at the University of Kentucky College of Law Library and later as its IT manager. Earlier in his career, he was a research historian at the Portland Historical Museum in Louisville and a project archivist with Jefferson County’s Office of Historic Preservation and Archives.

He is the author of Writing the Legal Record: Law Reporters in Nineteenth-Century Kentucky (2016), and co-author of Kentucky Legal Research, 2d (2017). He also served as managing editor and principal author of the Kentucky Legal Research Manual, 4th ed. (2016), and co-author of United at Last: The Judicial Article and the Struggle to Reform Kentucky’s Courts (2006). His articles have appeared in library, legal and historical journals.

Professor Metzmeier has presented at numerous professional conferences, including the Kentucky Bar Association, American Association of Law Libraries and the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction. He is active in several professional and scholarly organizations, including the American Association of Law Libraries, the Kentucky and Louisville Bar Associations, the Kentucky Library Association, the American Bar Association and the Kentucky Historical Society.
