Dr. Cai research interests include: 

1) Roles of trace elements, such as zinc, iron and copper, and related metallothionein in diabetes-induced cardio-vascular diseases, focusing on the role of oxidative stress in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy; 

2) Impact of environmental exposure to nonessential metals such as cadmium and antimony on the victim and their offspring in the metabolic syndrome, cardiovasuclar diseases, and cancer; 

3) Effect of low dose ionizing radiation and associated hormesis and adaptive response,and its potential application into clinical radiation protection and cancer radiotherapy;

4) Impacts of maternal exposure to enviromental metals and ionizing radiation on the offsrping risk of chronic diseases.
