Dr. Lucian Rothe is an Associate Professor of German at the University of Louisville. He grew up in Blankenburg/Harz (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) before moving to the United States in 2013. Dr. Rothe is a trained secondary school teacher for English, history and German as a foreign language (Philipps University of Marburg, Hesse, Germany). In 2015, he completed an M.A. in German Language and Literature at the University of Missouri—Columbia. He received his Ph.D. in German, with a Ph.D. Minor in Second Language Acquisition, from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 2020. In the same year, he joined the Department of Classical and Modern Languages.

Dr. Rothe's work—at the intersection of mixed-methods research in German Studies, Applied Linguistics, and Education—explores (stereotypical) perceptions of communities, approaches to engaging language programming, and teacher training frameworks.

The German Special Interest Group of ACTFL recognized his scholarship, teaching, and service efforts at the University of Louisville with the 2025 Award for Outstanding German Program Development and Advocacy.

Dr. Lucian Rothe also serves as Review Editor of Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German and Ortslektor of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
