Maureen McCall received her Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the State University of New York at Albany. She was a postdoc and a Scientist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has been a faculty member at the University of Louisville since 1998. The research in the McCall lab focuses on characterizing and comparing the normal retinal structure and function with changes that occur in diseased retinas and evaluating approaches to delay or arrest these changes in the diseased retina. We use molecular genetic manipulations in mice and pigs and create mutations leading to IRDs that alter retinal morphology & function. Disease models of human inherited retinal disease (IRD): retinitis pigmentosa, congenital stationary night blindness, Usher syndrome, Stargardt’s, Choroideremia, and LCA due to a mutation in CRB1. We utilize electrophysiological and morphological approaches to assay visual responses and retinal morphology at the cellular and overall levels in vivo and in vitro.
