Dr.  Schoech is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Liver Transplant in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and UofL Health Trager Transplant Center. He is a board-certified transplant hepatologist with expertise in advanced liver disease, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma, and complex transplant evaluation.  

Dr. Schoech joined the University of Louisville in 2025 to lead the redesign and growth of the liver transplant program. His work focuses on building high-performance multidisciplinary systems of care, modernizing transplant evaluation pathways, strengthening quality metrics, and expanding access to transplantation across Kentucky and the surrounding region. He is actively engaged in expanding donor utilization strategies, including extended criteria donors, viral-positive donors, and innovative approaches to optimize transplant candidacy.

Prior to joining UofL, Dr. Schoech spent more than a decade at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as Medical Director of Liver Transplant and ACGME Program Director for the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship. During that time, he helped grow a high-volume transplant and hepatology program, implemented performance and quality initiatives, expanded the donor pool through protocol innovation, and trained the next generation of transplant hepatologists.

His clinical and academic interests include advanced cirrhosis management, portal hypertension, transplant candidacy optimization, frailty and prehabilitation, donor utilization strategies, hepatocellular carcinoma, and clinical trials in metabolic and cholestatic liver disease. He is committed to developing collaborative, regionally integrated models of transplant care that improve outcomes and access for patients with advanced liver disease.
