Peter Hedera is a distinguished board-certified neurologist and medical geneticist specializing in movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and inherited neurodegenerative conditions. With more than two decades of clinical, academic, and research experience, he is recognized for his expertise in diagnosing and treating complex neurologic disorders, including tremor, dystonia, Huntington’s disease, and spasticity.

Dr. Hedera currently serves as Professor of Neurology and Director of the Movement Disorders Program at the University of Louisville. He is also the Medical Director of the institution’s Multidisciplinary Huntington’s Disease Clinic, where he leads comprehensive care initiatives for patients with hereditary neurodegenerative disorders. His clinical practice emphasizes advanced therapeutic approaches, including deep brain stimulation, surgical interventions for movement disorders, and the use of botulinum toxin therapies for dystonia and spasticity.

Before joining the University of Louisville in 2020, Dr. Hedera spent nearly two decades at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he served as Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology from 2001 to 2020. During his tenure at Vanderbilt, he contributed extensively to clinical education, patient care, and translational neuroscience research.

In addition to his clinical leadership, Dr. Hedera directs a neuro-genetics research laboratory focused on the molecular mechanisms and genetic causes of inherited neurodegenerative diseases. His research has advanced understanding of movement disorders and rare neurologic syndromes, contributing to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. He has co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and remains actively involved in academic collaborations and clinical research initiatives in neurology and medical genetics.
