SPONSORED PROJECTS
Art-based pedagogy
Incorporating arts-based pedagogy into the nursing curriculum, I have endeavored to open students' minds and hearts to diverse patient conditions and experiences. By utilizing art forms such as literature, theater, and visual arts, I have created powerful, immersive experiences that humanize medical conditions beyond clinical symptoms. Storytelling and role-playing exercises enable students to empathize with patients, understanding not just their physical, but also emotional and psychological struggles. This approach nurtures compassion, critical thinking, and holistic care skills. As a result, students become better prepared nurses, equipped not only with medical knowledge but also with a profound sense of empathy and cultural competency.
Virtual Reality in Mental Health Nursing Curriculum
In the mental health nursing curriculum, I have integrated virtual reality (VR) to enhance students' empathy towards patients with mental health conditions. By immersing students in simulated environments that mimic the experiences of those living with mental health alterations, VR offers a first-person perspective that is both enlightening and deeply humanizing. These immersive experiences enable students to grasp the emotional and psychological impacts of mental health disorders, fostering greater empathy. Additionally, VR simulations provide a safe space for students to practice clinical interactions, improving their communication skills and boosting their confidence. Consequently, students are better prepared to engage with patients compassionately and competently in real-world clinical settings.
Human sex trafiic surviors
Taking nursing students into a community health setting to work with survivors of human sex trafficking has profoundly impacted their clinical competence. This hands-on experience exposed students to the complexities and trauma endured by these survivors, fostering a deep understanding and empathy. Students learned to identify subtle signs of trafficking, from physical indicators to behavioral cues, thus becoming more adept at recognizing at-risk individuals across various settings, including emergency rooms, pediatrics, and women's health. Through direct interaction, students built confidence in assessing and responding to trafficking concerns, ultimately feeling more capable of identifying and supporting survivors and those at risk in any clinical environment.
Consciousness
My profound interest in near-death experiences (NDEs) and consciousness stems from their profound impact on patients’ lives and well-being. These extraordinary events often bring about significant psychological and spiritual transformations, affecting patients' perspectives on life, death, and health. As a nurse, it is crucial to be prepared to discuss these experiences empathetically and knowledgeably. Understanding consciousness and its various dimensions equips nurses to offer compassionate support, validate patients' experiences, and address any fear or confusion they might have. By fostering an open dialogue and a deeper comprehension of NDEs, nurses can better fulfill their role as holistic caregivers, promoting healing beyond the physical realm.
