Dr. Ryan Luke is an assistant professor of Mathematics and the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Mathematics at the University of Louisville. With over 20 years of experience teaching college mathematics at multiple institutions, Dr. Luke remains deeply committed to student success and the scholarship of teaching and learning. His research focuses on improving student learning outcomes and innovating pedagogical practices in mathematics education, and his background in Computational Mathematics led him to build an expertise in Educational Technology and Adaptive Courseware. On the crusade to promote greater adoption of active learning strategies and evidence-based teaching practices while embracing the encroaching technology tools, Dr. Luke is responsible for the phrase, "Meaningful Integration (also sometimes referred to as Meaningful Implementation)," used in course design and educational technology discussions to describe the holistic approach of building technology/courseware into courses with intention so that tools are saturatingly woven throughout a course while aiming for greater conceptual depth and focusing on significant improvement of student metrics, mastery of learning objectives, and enhancing the overall experience for both students and faculty, eliminating limits previously imposed by a student’s level of preparation or one’s demographics.

Prior to his current academic appointment, Dr. Luke served as a Program Director in the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning at UofL, where he spent time as an Educational Developer designing and leading faculty development programs to encourage learner-focused course design and foster the improvement of instructional outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Luke led a grant-funded initiative from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), exploring the efficacy and scalability of adaptive courseware in undergraduate education. He continues to collaborate with the APLU, Every Learner Everywhere, and the Gates Foundation, mentoring faculty and consulting with institutions, vendors, and educational leaders.

Widely recognized as an expert in adaptive learning technologies—including platforms like ALEKS, LumenOne, and MyLab—Dr. Luke is also a national leader in active learning strategies and course design for mathematics instruction. He has delivered numerous invited talks and workshops at universities and industry events and regularly presents at national conferences. Considered a thought leader in this space, his professional contributions are also supported through active involvement with organizations such as APLU, Every Learner Everywhere, OLC, WCET, WICHE, ELI, and others.

Dedicated to continuously improving the student learning experience, Dr. Luke has extensive training in the use of learning assistants and peer mentorship models. As former coordinator of the Structured Learning Assistants program in the Math Department, he developed training programs and instructional materials to support in-class, real-time student assistance. His ongoing work in this area is inspired by the Learning Assistant Alliance (LAA) and seeks to further elevate student success across campus.
