Professor Massey began his tenure at UofL in 2002 after successfully completing pre-tenure review at UC Denver where he taught from 1998 to 2002, at the rank of tenure track assistant professor. The Sculpture program at UofL had fallen on hard times and needed revitalization. There were only two tools that were functional when he arrived, an engineer’s hammer and a hand-held circular saw. He used the entirety of his start up funds as well as his personal funds to purchase equipment for the shop for teaching. He went on to use his IRIG grants from the university to install a foundry for teaching and research. That project required writing a 27-page environmental and safety outline for the EPA personnel in Frankfort, Kentucky. During his tenure at UofL he served as Chair of the department from July 2016 to July 2021, during which time he designed and implemented curricular and safety protocols during the COVID pandemic, oversaw the premiere of the MFA program and the move into the MFA and Faculty studio facilities at 1616 Rowan Street. Prior to service as Chair, he served as Chair Pro Tempore, for six months as sabbatical replacement for his colleague, Professor Chan. 

Since 2002 he has served as Chair for the Personnel Committee, Student Affairs Committee, Programs and Operations Committee, multiple search committees and many ad hoc committees to support the department.      

Professor Massey is faculty designate and sponsor for two named lectures, the Nora Iasigi Bullitt Memorial lecture in Sculpture and the Sam Richards Memorial lecture in Sculpture, which together have sponsored artists such as Ann Hamilton, Ernesto Burgos, Herman van Bergen, Matthew Ronay, Nneka Kai, Annie Lopez and Jeff Falk. He organized a meeting with 13 students and Maya Lin at the Cressman Center for the Arts and was part of the original planning for the Cressman Center as it was supposed to be for Glass and Sculpture courses. He voluntarily ceded the space for sculpture to glass to ensure that there was enough room for that program to grow. He was instrumental in establishing each of the named lectures as well as well as guiding donors to establish funds for other areas while he was Chair.  

Professor Massey currently serves as Director of Graduate Studies, Head of the Sculpture Program, Head of 3D Foundations, and Chair, of the P&O Committee. He is supervisor for the Sculpture Program Coordinator and contributes to the Curriculum Committee, while actively participating in recruitment and retention efforts for the department and also oversees PTL, GTAs, Term and TT faculty teaching in 3-D Design.
