Dr. Barnes is actively involved in numerous leadership positions locally in Louisville. She is the Chief of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Norton Children's Hospital. She serves on a number of hospital committees at Norton Children's Hospital, including the Medical Executive Committee, and Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee. Additionally, she serves on the Medical Advisory Committee for the Office for Children with Special Health Care Needs.

She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and amember of multiple national organiziations including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS) and American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA). She regularly speaks at conferences and meetings locally, regionally and nationally. Locally, she is a member of the Kentucky Dental Association and the Kentucky Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Additionally, she enjoys serving on a variety of medical mission trips, which have taken her to El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and the Philippines. She also serves her local community by volunteering as a cleft and craniofacial surgeon for the multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial team at the Office for Children with Special Health Care Needs.
