Professor Dowling studies planetary atmospheric dynamics.  He is the principal architect of the open-source EPIC Atmospheric model, which is used by NASA and researchers around the world to model the weather on other planets. His 4-decades of research led to the Deguchi-Hirota-Dowling Hurdle Theorem, which indicates when a shear flow will be unstable, a key question in fluid dynamics that had been open for over a century.
