As a person existing at the intersection of multiple socially constructed identities tied to structural oppression, I have liberatory commitments. These commitments are illustrated through participatory and translational research activities that center social identity, racial and ethnic identity development, sociopolitical development, and healing centered engagement. These theories and approaches to public health prevention and intervention are critical beyond public health because they summon analyses of political, social, structural, economic, and other power forces that facilitate and sustain root causes of inequity and oppression through (white) supremacy. Additionally, these approaches charge participants across society to innovate and transform culture in ways that secure and protect human rights across social ecology. I have applied these commitments in local, statewide, and international communities prioritizing topics such as violence prevention, infectious disease prevention, chronic disease prevention, and education justice.
