Yoannis Imbert-Fernandez, PhD,  is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Oncology/Hematology, School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. Dr. Imbert-Fernandez is a scientist with an interest in understanding the molecular events leading to resistance to anti-cancer therapies, particularly as it relates to breast cancer. She received a Bachelor of Science from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Havana, Cuba in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Louisville in 2010. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Medical Oncology/Hematology at the University of Louisville in 2015. Her basic and translational research integrates diverse approaches to elucidate genetic and metabolic mechanisms underlying resistance to targeted therapies and to design novel therapeutic regimens to minimize recurrence. Ongoing translational studies in her laboratory focus on the study of molecular alterations promoting drug therapy resistance in breast cancer. This is achieved by performing transcriptomic and metabolic analysis of drug resistant breast cancer tumors. Using this approach, her laboratory has identified key vulnerabilities of drug-resistant tumors that can be exploited to design novel therapies that may extend survival and ultimately change the outcome of metastatic breast cancer patients. Dr. Imbert-Fernandez has published in journals such as JBC and Cancer metabolism. She is serves as a standing member for the NIH Mechanisms of Cancer Therapeutics A study section.
